What is SMASHfestUK

There’s a Super-volcano about to erupt in February 2017!

Life as we know it is under threat…

SMASHfestUK is back for its third year and things are getting scarier…

SMASHfestUK is a free festival for all ages based mainly in Deptford, South East London over the February Half Term 2017 (all week in the Deptford Lounge, and Thursday 16th to Friday 17th of February in the Albany Theatre). Featuring comedy and variety shows, interactive installations, music, film, participatory art and engineering, experiments and theatre, it explores science, technology, engineering and maths through the arts and design.

Unbeknownst to the good people of Deptford a super volcano has been sleeping gently under Lewisham and things are going to get hot! A free STEM/Arts festival, SMASHfestUK explores how to survive and rebuild when everything you know has been shaken to bits, smothered in ash or plain cooked. And what to do when the very air you breathe can kill you, the plants and animals are dead and it’s raining sulphuric acid…

SMASHfestUK will take over the entire Albany Theatre including the performance spaces, café and garden. There will also be events at the Deptford Lounge Library, with satellite events at Middlesex University, Colindale (March) and Woolwich (April) and a market stall in Deptford Market. The programme includes survival village and technology building and survival skills, a participatory recreation of a doomed Deptford, the Volcano Detection and Survival Unit training camp, a VR journey into a volcano, and loads more. All overlooked by a world-record breaking (hopefully!) giant volcano, eruption imminent!

At Deptford Lounge Library all week will be events such as the Volcano Supermarket Sweep game and immersive shelter shack, arts and crafts, storytelling, and a series of films all based on the theme of volcanoes.

Can you make it…

SMASHfestUK is a narrative driven festival with a specific mission to widen participation and build diversity in science, technology, engineering and maths, STEM, through the Arts. We gratefully thank our Partners and Sponsors without whom this would all not be possible.
